Along with Euman, mixed reality computing business, which is behind Playing Mondo Parks, I have as an artist come to a project partnership on Mixed Reality Art School and have invited five other professional artists, each with their expertise in the project: Astrid Lomholt (Sound Seeking), Thomas Lagermand Lundme (Your and My story), Jonas Stampe (Social Media), Anton Breum (1:1 film) and Ene Cordt (modeling and architecture).

It will be interesting to follow the next six months of intense development of our individual and shared Mixed Reality Art artwork for Mixed Reality Art School in PlayingMondo

During my involvement in Mixed Reality Art School, I will use my many years of experience with CREATIVE ACTIONS and the bodily, spatial and visual expressions generated through urban space as particular by art concepts of Body Pics and Collective Strings – and examine how this material can be utilized in a mixed reality .

Here are some of the questions I ask at the start of the project and it will be interesting to follow the answers to this over the next months of intense mixed reality art development:

COLLECTIVE STRINGS How do you pull a mixed reality GPS-3D-string track behind oneself, what happens when you do it alone and collectively, and how you continue working on it on your computer, e.g can we manipulate the shape, give the collective string tracks sound?

Can it be used for arts in schools, for example, for tasks in perspective drawing, modeling, spatial learning or reflection about city life?

BODY PICS Is our MRA project in cooperation technically duable to go the media route, investigating how a bodily expression may prove, for example in a 3D recognition of the body via the mobile camera and translated into animation, or via Kinectbox and a screen?

Can Body Pics be used as virtual building blocks in a puzzle game for school children who find themselves giving proposals for urban movements in a kind of all-party parkour, e.g in a virtual mess-mother?

CKO – The Center for Culture and Experience Economy - has provided financing for Mixed Reality Art School.
CKO  is an independent government-funded agency established in 2008 by the Ministry of Economics and Business Affairs and the Ministry of Culture.

From 1 December 2011 to 1 March 2012 in Husum  a suburb of Copenhagen, Denmark, there will be sounds and lights of Husum Vocal from Talking Glowing Heads hanging high in the electric poles in places where the young girls from Club 348 want a mood change in the urban

If you pass under the Husum Vocal in the darkness of winter, then the sensors react and the installations begin to light-sound the pulse of local voices and sound expression 3.5 meters up over one’s head. Enjoy!

12 young girls from the leisure club Club 348 made up their own sounds for the heads. The girls went on the streets and recorded people’s voices in Husum. All material was mounted as interactive LED-Rgb-light & sound inside ‘technique-skulls’ made of IKEA trash bins, which the girls covered with recycled rubber tubes + more from the scrap-dealer to form the Talking Glowing Heads together with artist Karoline H. Larsen.

Karoline did the light-technical stuff with Rgb-controller etc. and got help from sound engineer Søren Lyngsø Knudsen, who did the sound-technical stuff, with help for Fez programming (Visuals C#) from Sune Hede and Carl Emil Carlsen

Performative Urban Design seeks to identify emerging trends in urban design as they are reflected in the city’s architecture and spatial design. A ‘cultural grafting’ of the inner city is taking place, and urban development is pursuing an intense city life, in which architecture and art are playing a catalytic role. On the one hand, this development has focused on massive investments in ‘corporate architecture’. On the other hand cities have invested heavily in new cultural centres and performative urban spaces that can fulfil a growing desire for entertainment and culture. The anthology Performative Urban Design addresses these issues through three lenses:

·  Place Making, and
·  Urban Catalyst
The articles identify the relevant theoretical positions within architecture, art and urban strategies, and they demonstrate the concepts and methodological approaches drawn from practical experience.

When you sit in Tarantula on first floor in the VIP area of the privately owned cultural quay dock, Docken.dk, you can see beyond North Port and onto neighboring property, where it flows with scrap iron, wire, insulation and much more at the small scrap dealer. North Port is today an industrial port area in which Copenhagen Municipality has planned a new future sustainable urban area.

Tarantula is made of the material that even the scrap dealer described as a scrap. He said, “You do me a favor by taking it away, which I otherwise have to pay to get rid of.” “Tarantula rose up out of scrap’s waste, as a body lying in the black snake-like organs and protruded from beneath the snow. We carried it inside, washed it and started a merge of the isolation tubes and cable pipes, as with ass and shoving turned into a bodily formation, which we could hang on wires from the ceiling. Now you can sit or lie down in the Tarantula’s body web and feel its movements,” says Karoline H. Larsen.

Tarantula is created by visual artist Karoline H. Larsen and trainee Zissel A. Kjertum-Mohr.

Krabbesholm Højskole, Skive

Collective Strings took place at Krabbesholm Art School as a task for the students of Architecture to integrate the strings outdoor and between of the architectural context of the school.

Charlottenborg Exhibition, June 18th – August 30th, 2009

As a part of the Charlottenborg exhibition Works at Work, curated by Charlotte Bagger Brandt, Karoline H. Larsen made a Collective Strings co-creation workshop with Dennis Bomgaard Glashøj, Kasper Johansen, Dennis Junker, Rickey Kristensen and Philip Rosenstand from Half-way House Lysholmgård - an institution under the Directorate of Probation Service – which act as transition pension with the aim of preparing residents to freedom after serving a prison sentence. During 8 days Karoline and the five men from Lysholmgård collaborated on the String-intervention until the opening where the public was invited to continue the string-tracking.

“It’s been exciting to try to work in such a house with a ‘real’ artist, and see what other artists come up with.
I hope this gives room to the other prisoners who are allowed to do something similar in the future. ”

“I think the experience with strings has given me more than what I thought it might have given. Honestly I thought, what can you do with twenty rolls of string? We´ve got something funky out of it and it even has been different than the other stuff Karoline usually makes, because we have pulled the strings more tightly, and created something new.”

“I´ve been really happy during these days when I´ve left the work here. Nice to work with my fellow inmates and with something other than what we usually do. It has given some other sorts of conversations between us. We would have to talk about how we could do this. What the hell can you do with strings? It´s crazy what you can do with strings…and you can do much more.”

Unge vilde i KUNSTENs skulpturpark
- Action Painting og sne-engle om sommeren

Ål dig som en sne-engel eller bevæg dig som en skulptur. 25 unge fra Rusland, Kina, Tyskland, Lituaen, Island og Danmark laver blandt andet Action Painting og sne-engle i KUNSTENs skulpturpark i Aalborg under ART ON THE MOVE, som finder sted i forbindelse med Ungdomslegene. Fra den 3.-5. august kan museets gæster se værkerne blive til, og teste de unges Sne-engle og Sculpture Moves på egen krop i weekenden den 6.-7. august.

Ål dig som sne-engel – om sommeren
Kigger man forbi KUNSTENs skulpturpark fra 6. august kan man give sig i kast med at bevæge sig efter de unges sne-engle, som er kropsomrids malet direkte på græsset med en kridtmaskine, som vi kender fra optegning af sportsbaner. Her er i stedet tale om en organisk og poetisk hvid kunstbane med sne-engle, der minder om dem, man kan lave i sneen om vinteren.

Bevæg dig som en skulptur: Lav et Sculpture Move
Tag far og mor eller en ven i hånden og test de unges bud på Sculpture Moves. Det vil sige, man kan prøve at bevæge sig som en skulptur langs med de unges midlertidige skilterute gennem skulpturparken.

De unge har tilmeldt sig workshoppen på baggrund af KUNSTENs oplæg til workshopprogrammet i foråret, hvor kunst og bevægelse og Action Painting var omdrejningsaksen. Med reference til KUNSTENs værker af bl.a. De Unge Vilde, Asger Jorn, Niki de Saint Phalle og Per Mølgaard vil de unge få mulighed for selv at arbejde med Action Painting i praksis.

• ART ON THE MOVE er en 3 dages workshop om kunst og bevægelse og Action Painting, som udspiller sig i KUNSTENs skulpturpark i Aalborg med 25 unge i alderen 13-15 år fra Rusland, Kina, Tyskland, Lituaen, Island og Danmark. De unge er kommet til Aalborg for at deltage i den kulturelle del af Youth Games 2011, som afholdes hvert 4. år i en europæisk by.

The Living Group Portrait is a 120 minutes video/film installation (5 x 8 meter wall projection) made for the exhibition “Med Kærlig Hilsen/With Love” as a feministic comment on the 250 year anniversary of the Academy. In the movie you´ll hear 80 individuals telling about their personal relationship with the common term “feminism”. Meanwhile you see a making up of the traditional, static, hierarchical group portrait turning into a living portrait recorded over 120 minutes in the front yard of Arthall Charlottenborg. The portrait questions categorisation, representation and writing of history – and rises a discussion on the personal relationship to feminism. The movie is based on an open invitation to people regarding themselves as feminists. Invitations were send to appropriate feministical, political, artistical networks. 220 people showed up on February 29, and participated in the group portrait recordings. 80 chose to give their personal statement on feminism.

The installation is made in a collaboration between Charlotte B. Johansen, Christina Hamre, Karoline H. Larsen, Mille Rude, Maria Werger. The installation is linked to the work Action Negotiation Transformation from the same exhibition.

Slå vejrmøller gennem Strandparken i Holbæk

20 nye Kropsskilte står klar i Strandparken. De er skræddersyet til parken og opfordrer til forskellige øvelser, som alle kan kaste sig ud i. Måge Dyk, Fjordreje Kys og Vejrmølle Vinger er tre af de utraditionelle muligheder for aktivitet i parken.

Strandparkens romantiske snit, den unikke fjord samt parkens dyr, planter og blomster har dannet baggrund for farver og bevægelser til Kropsskiltene. Skiltene er inspireret af de kendte piktogramskilte fra skove og parker – men her opfordrer de til leg og bevægelse i stedet for at forbyde for eksempel hunde og knallerter.

- Parkens gæster kan mime bevægelserne fra skiltene eller skabe deres eget udtryk med udgangspunkt i for eksempel billedet Måge Dyk. Måske får gæsterne også øjnene op for andre af parkens dyr, farver og lyde, som så kan inspirere til helt nye bevægelser, forklarer Karoline H. Larsen, der er kunsteren bag Kropsskiltene.

Karoline H. Larsen har undervejs fået aktiv og opfindsom hjælp af elever fra Produktionsskolen Nordvestsjælland. De unge har – guidet af kunstneren og med opbakning fra deres lærere – været med i hele processen fra udviklingen af bevægelserne, billedbearbejdningen og omsætningen af bevægelserne til piktogrammer, samt malingen af stolperne, og til slut monteringen af de færdige skilte.

Projektet er gennemført i samarbejde med Kultur- og fritidssekretariatet i Holbæk Kommune.

Utraditionelt samarbejde

Eleverne fra NVProduktionsskole opfinder bevægelser til Strandparken og bagefter udvælges de bedste til Kropsskilte i samarbejde med kunstner Karoline H. Larsen. Det er et samarbejde imellem 5 forskellige faglinier: Et samarbejde som Karoline sætter igang og appelerer til imellem Mette’s Erhvervsklasse, Michella’s Natur/Pæd.elever, Riki og Malene’s Medielinie, Anker’s Håndværkerlinie og Daniel’s USB-elever på det Grønne Hold.

På Medielinien var det Preben og Camilla som tog fotos af Erhvervsklassen og Natur/Pæd.elevernes bevægelser i Strandparken, og det var Kasper og Martin som meldte sig til at lave de udvalgte fotos om til piktogrammer. Anker fra Håndværkerlinien bestilte egestolperne hjem og snedker Ole høvlede og rundede dem til, og Heidi Maria og Maria fra Håndværkerlinien grundede stolperne sammen med Karoline, ind til Erhvervsklassen og Natur/Pæd.eleverne også kom og malede stolperne med hver deres fine farver afstemt og inspireret af parkens naturlige farver (syren, forsythia, tulipan etc.). Daniel’s USB-elever, bliver det Grønne Hold, som står for monteringen af stolperne sammen med Erhvervsklassen og Natur/Pæd.eleverne. Karoline trækker dem alle sammen med i Strandparken og får sat processen i sving.

Utraditionelt samarbejde giver aktivitet i Strandparken Holbæk

Holbæk Kommune har i samarbejde med kunstneren Karoline H. Larsen taget initiativ til en utraditionel sam-skabelse imellem kunstneren og elever fra Produktionsskolen Nordvestsjælland. De skal i fællesskab skabe en række Kropsskilte, som kan inspirere til fysisk aktivitet og leg.

Kunstnerens idé til Kropsskiltene er inspireret af de traditionelle piktogramstandere, som kendes fra skove, stier og offentlige parker. Dog er der en afgørende forskel med Kropsskiltene, for hvor standerne normalt angiver alt det, man ikke må, giver Kropsskiltene idéer til aktiviteterne, de besøgene gerne må give sig i kast med.

- Aktiviteterne bliver udviklet specielt til Strandparken, og de kommer til at tage udgangspunkt i parken og omgivelserne omkring den. Jeg kunne derfor sagtens forestille mig, at vi kommer til at se for eksempel møllesving eller krabbegang, fortæller Laila Gdowski, der er naturvejleder i Holbæk Kommune.

Usædvanligt samarbejde

Hvilke aktiviteter parkens besøgende fremover kan prøve kræfter med, skal cirka 20 unge fra Produktionsskolen Nordvestsjælland og kunstneren Karoline H. Larsen i fællesskab finde ud af. De har stort set frie hænder – men der er dog krav om, at aktiviteterne skal udformes i respekt for den romantiske have og dens unikke funktion, historie og værdi.

- Jeg foreslog et samarbejde med en af Holbæk’s Produktionsskoler, fordi det giver mening at lokalmiljøet er med til at gen-opfinde sig i Strandparken og sam-skabe kropsbevægelser til skiltene, fortæller Karoline H. Larsen, der er billedkunstneren bag Kropsskiltene, Kunstneren blev inviteret til byen efter at naturvejleder Laila Gdowski oplevede en version af Kropsskiltene i Søndermarken på Frederiksberg.

Den 27. april har Karoline H. Larsen og de unge og deres lærere sat hinanden i stævne i Strandparken for at finde frem til de forskellige bevægelser, og i dagene derefter vil de i fællesskab og på tværs af fagklasserne udforme og fremstille Kropsskiltene.

- Dette særlige samarbejde er en spændende måde at opnå synergi mellem en udøvende kunster og de unge fra omegnen. Eleverne fra produktionsskolen bliver aktive medskabere af det kunstværk, som Kropsskiltene jo bliver, og jeg er sikker på, at de kan bidrage med nye spændende idéer til kunsten, siger Emrah Tuncer, der er formand for Udvalget for Kultur og Fritid i Holbæk Kommune.

I uge 25 bliver Kropsskiltene afsløret, så de er klar til byens borgere og besøgende udefra, når vejret for alvor indbyder til udendørs aktivitet.

Staten og Sparekassen Sjælland støtter

- Vi har modtaget et flot tilskud fra Statens Kunstfond som støtte til initiativet, og pengene er vi naturligvis meget glade for, men det er også en stor glæde, at Statens Kunstfond på denne måde anerkender projektets kvalitet, understreger kultur- og fritidschef Brian Ahlquist.

Han fortæller desuden, at Sparekassen Sjælland har valgt at gå indgå som partner i projektet og samtidig bidrage med tilskud til projektet. Kultur- og fritidschefen sætter stor pris på, at en lokal virksomhed på denne måde vil medvirke til at gøre det atypiske samarbejde til virkelighed.

- Vi er glade for at være med i et lidt anderledes projekt, hvor unge mennesker udfordres af en kunstner, og hvor resultatet bliver en ekstra en på opleveren i Strandparken, siger Sparekassen Sjællands CEO direktør Lars Petersson.

20 new Body Signs are ready in Strandparken Holbaek. They are tailored to the park and calls for different exercises that anyone can engage in and create their own look. Seagull Dive, Shrimps’ Kisses, Earthworms’ Dance and Weather Mill Blades are three of the unconventional opportunities for activity in the park.

Body Signs are created in an unusual collaboration between students from Production School Nordvestsjælland across 5 faculties guided by me, the artist behind the Body Signs, and with support from their teachers.

The project was implemented in cooperation with Culture and Leisure Department in Holbæk Municipality. Thanks to the Danish Arts Foundation and Savings Zealand for financial support.

Untraditional collaboration allows movement in Strandparken Holbæk

Holbæk Municipality in collaboration with artist Karoline H. Larsen initiated an unconventional co-creation between the artist and students from Productionschool Nordvestsjælland. They will jointly create a series of Body Pictograms, that can inspire physical activity and play.

The artist’s idea for the Body Pictograms are inspired by traditional pictogram-wooden-poles known from forests, trails and public parks in Denmark. However, there is one crucial difference with the Body Pictograms, for where Pictograms normally indicating everything that we should not do then Body Pictograms give ideas for activities, the visits are free to embark with.

- The movements are designed specifically for the park, Strandparken, and they come to build the park and surrounding area around it. I could easily imagine that we will see, for example, mill swing or crab walk, “says Laila Gdowski, who is the nature guide of Holbæk Municipality.

Unusual cooperation becomes co-creation

What activities the park’s visitors come to try, will be up to the approximately 20 youths from Production School Nordvestsjælland and artist Karoline H. Larsen jointly to find out. They have virtually a free hand – but there are requirements that activities be designed with respect for the romantic gardens and its unique function, history and value.

- I suggested a collaboration with one of Holbæk’s Production schools because it makes sense to have the local environment help re-invent themselves in Strandparken and co-creating body movements for the pictograms, says Karoline H. Larsen, who is the artist behind Body Pictograms. The artist was invited to the city after nature guide Laila Gdowski had experienced a version of the Body Pictograms in Søndermarken in Frederiksberg.

On 27 April, Karoline H. Larsen and young people and their teachers come together to meet in the beach park to find out the different movements, and the following days they will jointly and across school faculties design and manufacture Body Pictograms.

- This special collaboration is an exciting way to achieve synergy between an artist and the young people from the surrounding area. Pupils from the production school become active co-creators of the artwork as Body Pictograms will be and I am sure that they can help with exciting new ideas for art,” said Emrah Tuncer, chairman of the Committee for Culture and Leisure in Holbæk Municipality.

At week 25 Body Pictograms are revealed, so they’re ready for locals and visitors from outside when the weather is really perfect for outdoor activity.

The State and Sealand’s Savings Bank support

- We have received 90,000 DKK from the Danish Arts Foundation to support the initiative and the money we are naturally delighted, but it’s also a great joy that the Danish Arts Foundation in this way recognizes the quality of the project, stresses the cultural and leisure manager Brian Ahlquist.

He says further that Sealand’s Savings Bank has chosen to take part as partner in the project, while contributing with DKK 25,000 Culture and leisure boss appreciate that a local company in this way will help make it atypical cooperation into reality.

- We are pleased to be in a slightly different project where young people are challenged by an artist, and where the result is an extra one on the experiencer in the beach park, said Sealand’s Savings Bank CEO Lars Petersson.
