McCarren Park, Brooklyn, New York
May 13 2007
Karoline H. Larsen invited Jasmine Zimmerman, an american visual artist from Seattle, to do collaboration on “Collective Strings” in New York City. New Yorkers and foreigners were invited to join “21.000 m Collective Strings NYC” which took place in 5 different parks and squares in New York City. In Prospect Park and Central Park the actions took place spontaniously without permissions. To get an event permit for an art installation in Central Park may take up to 20 years, and most applications are rejected. Therefore the two artists simply decided to go there and make a Collective Strings action on the day of “Aids walk” as a celebration of life. In the end, the Central Park Conservatory agreed on a 15 minutes action.
McCarren Park in Brooklyn was chosen because it is an area with great social and cultural diversity. For this creative action, the artists got a permission after a lot of work. Invitations were sent to locals and foreigners through various emaillists. Several hundreds of people joined in, exploring the different stages of physical and emotional intensity wrapping each other in strings, standing on top of each other wearing the string webs, playing relaxed games and hanging out.
